That dress is just so chic.

She just has such an effortless sense of style.

How fabulous are these shoes!?

Chic, effortless, fabulous.

If you’re even remotely interested in the fashion and style industry you’ve definitely heard these words used time and again.

Not that they’re bad or especially dull words – they’re actually quite lively compared to their less inspiring counterparts – i.e. cool, fun, or nice. However with the amount we {yes we, I’m just as guilty} use them in the life and style blogosphere, they’ve become a bit  – as much as it pains me to say this – basic.

A dress described as chic doesn’t make it sound special anymore.

Yeah, yeah, we all want effortless style.

And fabulous shoes are a dime a dozen, what else is new?

I touched on avoiding boring and generic words in my first Simply Blog post when I gave you 10 tips to improving your blog writing.

Today I want to go a little deeper and provide you with a little downloadable tool to help up your word game even more.

Thesaurus.com is one of the best tools in my blogger toolkit. I always find myself getting stuck on one word that I know has a better alternative but I just can’t think of it off the top of my head – enter Thesaurus.com.

While I can’t provide guidance for every word you use, I can offer some help with the most common words you see on life and style blogs.

That’s right, we’re going beyond using words like stylish, exciting, and cute.

Below is a guide {read: blogger thesaurus} with words most commonly used in life and style blogging. Paired with each common word are a handful of alternative words you could use to break out of your effortlessly-chic word rut.

Remember the scene in Clueless where Cher is giving Tai lessons on her vocabulary?

Picture me as your Cher right now *does hair flip* – don’t use this guide sporadically {wink} and don’t limit these words to just your blog, try using them in everyday life.

Feel free to Pin, Print, Email, or Download this guide for future use and don’t forget to share it with your fellow blogger friends – you know they could use it too!

Any words you think are overused and should be on this list?

Let me know in the comments!

Thanks so much for reading.

  1. Fantastic post! I am definitely guilty of overusing the majority of these words. I think I (and a lot of other bloggers!) could use some alternatives for obsessed.

    • Thanks Cass! And obsessed is a good one! I am super guilty of overusing that word. I’ll add that in to the post – thanks for the suggestion!
