Ever come across a maxi dress, either online or in a store, that looks fabulous on the model/mannequin/rack – it’s sleek, has the perfect print and seems to be cut in just the right places. You squeal with delight, add it to your cart or skip to the dressing room convinced this is going to be a major new purchase and everyone is going to be thrilled with how stunning you look!
You try it on (either in the store or once it’s delivered) and all images of you being crowned most stylish within your crew go flying out the window. This wasn’t at all what you were expecting, it’s frumpy, the print is just god-awful, and it looks like you’re walking around in a personal size tent – what were you thinking?!
It happens to the best of us.
Though the maxi dress seems easy breezy, sometimes it can be a bit of a headache to style. Especially with such a variety to choose from, it can be overwhelming to find one perfect just for you.
A summer maxi dress is one of my favorite items to wear during this season, I practically wear them every day and I’m no stranger to getting duped by a pretty model and snazzy in-store marketing. However we don’t have to fall victim to this every time, and today I’m going to share 3 tactics you can use to effortlessly style your maxi dress no matter what by focusing on print, versatility, and definition.
First, for prints the general rule of thumb is to wear prints that are scaled to your body size. So, if you’re a full-figured bombshell then larger scale prints will typically work best and complement your frame. If you’re a petite lady smaller prints will suit you best as they won’t overwhelm your stature. However, in general long vertical prints are perfection for elongating and slimming down any body figure.
The second key to effortlessly styling your maxi dress is adding versatility. You want dresses that are easy to mix and match and can be worn for various occasions. You can never go wrong with a dress in a solid neutral color (blacks, browns, greys, whites, navy blues, and olive greens) as they go with absolutely anything and are super easy to dress up or down. A solid neutral also allows you to play with accessories more without overpowering or causing too much commotion as often happens with printed dresses. Don’t shy away from solid bold colors, especially if it’s one you know looks stunning on you!
Lastly, add definition. As you read above, some maxi dresses can be really loose-fitting making you look boxy or like you’re wearing a tent. An easy fix to this issue is to add definition at your waist, this can be done by tying on a belt, scarf, or ribbon at the waist or even throwing on a lightweight jacket that’s nipped.
Follow these 3 tips and you’ll be on your way to effortlessly rocking your maxi dresses every time!
