The Secret to Wearing Crop Tops for Spring

Hi everyone!

So Monday I reviewed my purchases from March and as I mentioned crop tops are going to be the ‘it’ item of the summer in my wardrobe. I know there are a lot of people who are unsure of the somewhat elusive crop top, but I can assure you they are not as tricky as one would think, it’s simply a matter of finding the proper cut and styling it according to your body and what you’re comfortable with. To help you out, here are five tips on how to effortlessly wear crop tops.

1. Play with proportion

When wearing a smaller top rather than pairing it with an equally smaller bottom, play with proportion and pair it with something with a higher waist. This works especially well for curvier women – take a look at Mindy Kaling, she is killing it in her crop top ensemble because her play on proportion is spot on. Her high waist skirt hits exactly at the smallest part of her waist and gives just a flash of skin, this helps keep the eye focused on the curves of her silhouette rather than the curve of her stomach.

2. Pair it with a more conservative bottom

Because crop tops can be a little more on the young and trendy side to make it look more sophisticated and chic style it with a more conservative bottom such as a pencil skirt (just like Mindy!) or tailored trousers (just like me!)

3. Get a box cut

Rather than a crop top that’s skin tight, opt for one with a loose, boxy cut. The boxier cut tend to be universally flattering no matter your body shape.

4. Cover it up

Still unsure about showing that much skin? Throw a cardigan, jacket, or blazer over it. You’ll feel more covered while still flashing a hint of your midriff – which I find to be sexier than baring all, it’s all about leaving some things to the imagination, ladies 😉

5. Layer it

Who says you have to show any skin at all? Layer your crop top over a fancier dress to make it more casual or throw one over a maxi, belt it, and then tuck the front of the crop top in the belt to help create more shape to your waist.

Out of all these tips, playing with proportion is my favorite way to rock a crop top! The boxy cut of this top pairs perfectly with the tailored cut of the red pants. I rocked some heels to dress it up and help elongate my legs, though for a more casual approach I would’ve paired it with sandals or fun flats.
