I’ve always believed Valentine’s Day was meant to celebrate all types of love and not just the romantic variety.
In today’s world, romantic love and the “need” to have it in your life, gets ridiculously played up especially when Valentine’s Day comes around.
And while it’s great if you have that love in your life – I’m certainly glad to have it with DCT – you shouldn’t feel bad if you don’t as it’s not the only type of love to be celebrated on this holiday.
There’s all types of love and you’re bound to have at least one if not several in your life currently.
There’s the unconditional love a parent has for their child, one of the most beautiful and highly coveted types of love.
The love between siblings, though maybe hard at times (I couldn’t tell you how many times my brother and I would fight growing up), is a love one is blessed to have. (Side note: I know these two are most likely not related in any way, but how stinkin cute are they?!)
The love you have between friends is something that can create bonds so strong it’s like they’re family.
The love from extended family, because no matter if you’re near or far – that’s blood, yo ;). You’ve got their back just as much as they’ve got yours.
Love for God and your religious beliefs. For however you identify yourself spiritually there’s belief in a higher power and in his unconditional love for you.
Love for your pets! For no matter how much they drive you crazy ::coughcough::mycats::coughcough:: there’s something special about having another life depend on you and, in their way, love you. Plus, let’s face it – they’re pretty darn cute.
Love for your work and the things you create for the world. If you don’t love your work right now, stop and find something you do. As cheesy as “YOLO” is, it’s still true.
Love for yourself. Probably one of the most important types of love, for if you don’t love yourself, how can you expect others to?
So, dear readers, whether you’ll be spending the holiday with that someone special or at home with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and Netflix (maybe cliche, but I’ve been there). Just remember this day should be spent celebrating all love, for as they say in one of my all time favorite movies, Love Actually – “If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is all around“.
And if anything, this day is the perfect excuse to gorge on chocolate and champagne – preferably together 😉
Happy Valentine’s Day, lovers
