Some Thoughts…

Hi everyone!

So today’s post is going to be a little different than usual. I will warn you there may be an excessive and at times completely unnecessary flow of emotions. So buckle up and get your feelings shoes on 😉

To start, I’ve never been one to be very open when it comes to my emotions. DCT can attest to this, as he either has to bribe or trick me some how to talk feelings with him 😉 Some research may reveal that growing up in a military family may have something to do with my lack of emotional expression, but I’m not going to use this time nor place to do a psycho-analysis on myself. Really, I just want to open up a little more to you all, as well as show some appreciation for your commitment to Kinks are the new Pink.

sparkle

It’s hard to believe that I’ve been steadily blogging on KATNP for only a year and a half. Honestly, it feels like I’ve been doing it for-ev-vur, not in the sense that I know everything there is to know about blogging and fashion and natural hair, because I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m still very much a newbie and I am continually learning something new everyday. But more or less because of the time, effort, blood, sweat, and tears I have put into this blog.

When I think about it, in the year and a half (which really isn’t that long, if this was a normal job I’d probably still be considered an entry-level employee) I’ve done at least two, if not more, major blog design overhauls, moved the blog to a new platform, collaborated with Refinery29, flew half way across the country to attend a blogger conference by myself (and met some really awesome bloggers along the way), started guest blogging on various sites, started pitching and working with various brands, hosted my first giveaway (with J.Crew nonetheless), and I’m currently in the works on hosting my very first event with another retailer (details on that to come!) – all of that while working full time, studying for my Master’s, traveling, and trying to keep some semblance of a social life. It’s no wonder I feel so exhausted half the time!

And I’m not putting all this out there to gloat, it’s more to put things into perspective. As a blogger, and I’m sure those of you who are also bloggers can attest to this, you tend to judge and compare yourself to your fellow bloggers – not necessarily in a malicious way, but while we support each other, we are also competitors and in order to maintain that competitive edge, you’ve got to stay aware of what others are doing.

creativity

For me personally, I find myself sometimes getting jealous of the opportunities some people have to collaborate with top tier brands or host fun events. And I find myself thinking — I work hard and I’m creative and fun, why aren’t I getting those opportunities?? But that’s exactly when I need to step back and put things into perspective. Because you see, a lot of these bloggers working with the top tier brands or hosting the best events have been blogging for 5+ some even 10+ years! And here I am with my 1.5 years wondering why I’m not getting the same opportunities. This is when I must mentally slap myself and recall that Rome was not built in a day. These bloggers have worked hard to get to where they are and I should not only respect that, but take the opportunity to learn from it, and finally be appreciative and grateful for where I am today.

Sure I’m not flying off to Paris to collaborate on a photo shoot with Louis Vuitton or getting invitation after invitation to Fashion Week, but I’d say I’m doing pretty darn well so far in my blogging career. And if I really think about it, it’s only just begun.

happy

So in closing I want to say to all the new bloggers and even the veterans out there — never discount the work and effort you put into your blog. It’s not easy running a blog, especially with other responsibilities in life, we’re not all meant to head down the same blogging path, it would honestly make it kind of boring. So enjoy the road you’re headed down and be grateful to every opportunity and every person you meet down that road.

With that said, I want to give a BIG internet high five, hugs, kisses, and THANK YOU to everyone who has been behind me and Kinks are the new Pink. Without your encouragement and constant support the blog and myself wouldn’t be where it is in the 1.5 years it’s been alive. So again, thank you! — And as they say, the best is yet to come and I hope you’re as excited as I am to see what it’ll bring!

Have a great Wednesday! And as always — Thanks for reading!

  1. Girl! Absolutely love this and am inspired by your spirit (and style!) daily. Keep up the killer work. :)

  2. You really inspired me for a long time! I didn’t even know you were soo busy! Hope you still enjoy the ride in combination with your responsibilities in life. If you keep inspiring people and sharing your absolutely grrreat sense of fashion and natural hair, all those opportunities will come flying at you. Time goes fast when you’re having fun 😛

    • Thanks Jaleesa! That’s so true, time does go fast when you’re having fun, and I will admit to having quite the good time 😉

  3. Ashlei, this was so inspiring! I just celebrated my one year blogiversary on the 20th and certainly echo your sentiments! I went (and sometimes currently go) through the same feelings at times but I just need to keep reminding myself that I’m still a babe in this game! Opportunities will come if I keep at it. Attending Blogging While Brown helped to put things in perspective. Honestly, for 1.5 yrs, the opportunities you’ve been given are pretty darn cool! Keep inspiring!

    • Thanks Toia! I have never heard of Blogging While Brown, but just looked it up and it seems amazing! I am definitely going to look into this for next year!
