5 Ways to Control Natural Hair in Humid Weather

Hi everyone! Last week we talked about beating humidity when it came to your clothes, but what about your curls? Once the weather starts getting a little more hot and sticky I definitely see a change in my curls with them becoming a little fluffier/frizzier. How to prevent this? Well unfortunately there is no fail-proof way to completely eliminate the effects humidity has on natural hair, our hair is naturally more porous (allowing more water in and out) than straight hair and therefore has a more noticeable response (frizzies, fly-aways, reversion, and shrinkage) when there are increases in humidity.

However there are ways to minimize these effects and make it less noticeable! Just follow some of the tips below to help you and your curls enjoy the summer heat rather than constantly fight it.

1. Embrace Your Texture

One of the best ways to fight the effects of humidity is to not fight it. Wearing your hair in it’s most natural state (i.e. wash-n-gos) is probably the easiest way to manage your hair during more humid weather. Reversion or shrinkage is no longer an issue when letting your hair run free. If you’d like a little extra security at keeping the frizzies at bay, be sure to let your hair dry before entering the humid climate outdoors.

2. Work close to your texture

When you have the desire to rock your hair in styles other than a wash-n-go working close to your texture via braidouts and twistouts can help minimize the unwanted effects of humidity. Straighter styles, such as blow-outs, that are farther from your actual texture are more likely to be ruined by the steamy weather.

3. Use a smoothing/glossing serum

When styling your hair, look for assistance from products with dimethicone/dimethiconol silicons. These silicons will coat the hair creating a barrier against the humidity in order to reduce reversion, skrinkage, and frizz. Keep in mind, however, that these silicons do not dissolve in water and can lead to build up over continued use so be sure to regularly shampoo to keep locks squeaky clean when using these products. Unsure of what products to try, here are a few popular selections among curly-heads:

Eco Styler Moroccan Argan Oil Styling Gel

Herbal Essence Set Me Up Gel

John Frieda Frizz Ease Original Serum

Bumble and Bumble Defrizz

Aveda Brillant Anti-Humectant Pomade

4. Wear a scarf/headband

On really humid days instead of working your butt off to fight inevitable frizz, throw your hair up in a cute high, low, or side bun! Who wants their hair down around their neck and shoulders on ridiculously hot days anyways? Add a scarf or headband to help tame any fly-aways and you’ll look uber-chic for any sticky, hot weather that may come your way.

5. Wear a protective style

When you really don’t want to be bothered with worrying about the state of your curls, protective styling is a great option! Reversion becomes a non-issue, shrinkage and frizzies are minimized and easier to embrace, and there’s no need to spend hours perfecting and protecting your curls every day. Some great protective style options are twists, braids, buns, updos, cornrows, flat twists, or braid extensions.

I hope these tips help! Is there anything you do to combat humidity that I didn’t mention? Let me know in the comments!

Hope everyone had a fantastic, long holiday weekend! Thanks for reading!

  1. Thanks for the great tips !!!!!!

I normally wear protective styles during the academic year (i’m a bit lazy) but since i’m graduating this summer, I’m considering wearing my natural hair out. So all of these points are really helpful

    • I totally understand about being lazy, you’re looking at the queen of laziness when it comes to my hair, haha! I’m glad you found everything so helpful and CONGRATS on graduating 😉

  3. […] We all have those days when the humidity is just really putting a damper on our hair. You searched and searched and couldn’t find that perfect product that would give you the results you were looking for. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, honey, dear, my sister, my brother, fellow member in this afro frenzy baby it’s not out there. Your hair will be affected by the weather. You will wake up some days with perfect curls everywhere but one small section and it will kill you. However, I have some news Usually when we think that our hair just looks the worse it could ever be someone as always will come up to you and pay you a compliment. Embrace your hair accept it for what it is. Your hair is natural and it will do as it very well pleases. Let your hair have its own personality. The shape texture and length of your hair gives it its personality as does the frizz. Now in order to avoid complete disaster try to style your hair in styles that are closer to your hair texture to combat humidity. […]

  4. […] Warmer weather also means more moisture in the air (one thing I’m not looking forward to – the sticky feeling of humidity), because the air is becoming less drying the amount you deep condition can decrease from once a week to once every other or even every two weeks depending where you live and how your hair typically reacts to humidity. This helps eliminate your hair from looking and feeling weighed down or limp. If you want more tips on beating humidity check out my previous post –> here. […]

  5. I used the serum for years by frizz-ease. It works, but i found something better last year and have not gone back – its the Shielo Leave in Protector Spray. This Shielo Spray makes my hair do things I thought it could never achieve. I have silky full hair without ever having a flat head. It still keeps it full. It doesn’t look greasy, it looks healthy! I have found hairsprays that I’ve been able to work with, but I still had to do so much manipulating. The Shielo Spray makes me feel like I have a professional hair stylist with me all the time.
